After three separate and highly publicised incidents of Dell notebooks spontaneously combusting, the world's largest PC maker has issued a huge recall of its notebook batteries to the tune of 4.1 million affected units. A link on its website states that: "Dell has identified a potential issue associated with certain batteries sold with Dell Latitude, Inspiron, XPS and Dell Precision Mobile Workstation notebook computers ... with cells manufactured by Sony and [Dell is] offering free replacements for these batteries. Under rare conditions, it is possible for these batteries to overheat, which could pose a risk of fire." Sony also makes batteries used in Apple, Lenovo and HP notebooks, though no recalls for these have

yet been issued. Point your browser to www.dell.com.au and click on the "Battery Recall" link at the bottom of the page to see if your notebook is affected. ST
